Removing Tape After a Paint Job [by: Halloweenking]
Hotrodders Bulletin Board: Knowledge Base: Body-Exterior: Articles

Fresh paint usually comes with the task of taping. Putting it on, taking it off. After you finish spraying, let the paint set a bit. When removing tape from freshly painted sheetmetal, always try and do it soon after you finish painting, if possible. Wait 10-20 minutes, then remove all tape with an edge to a painted surface (This does NOT have to be done, tape can be removed after paint has cured).

When removing tape, remove slowly in a slightly outward and down motion, this will let the tape roll back onto itself, preventing the paint from lifting and causing jagged edges. On custom designs, if you remove the tape in this fashion 5-10 minutes after painting was completed, it will help to round the edge of the fresh paint instead of having a "lip" because of the tape's thickness. You must be extremely careful when doing this so you don't mar the fresh paint.
