1.0/5.01.0/5.01.0/5.01.0/5.01.0/5.0   J.B.Donaldson Talks the Talk but doesn't Walk the Talk
Reviewer: MEL KEIM from Connecticut     August 07, 2002

I am far from satisfied with the 1936 Ford 3 window coupe that I bought. The body and parts are far from the online statements. This is a quote from JB's web site:

"Extremely strong, one-piece integrated structure that resists flexing. The body is then cured in J.B.'s post-cure over at 180F to prevent warping" "Everything we make is show quality, and we guarantee all parts to be the very best quality available. Many of our parts are superior to original parts in fit, finish and suitability for modern use." "Our parts and cars require little or no body work to prepare for paint."

The hidden hinges option is horrible. The door lines are wide in this area. They rub & bind when opening and closing. The hinges have minimal adjustment. The metal frame around the doors protrudes out into the windshield view. The excuse was, "it's the first hidden hinges we installed on one of our cars."

The optional 36 fender's w/37 Ford lights; Were not the same in size and fit. The flange was not wide enough to fasten the grille properly. This problem was addressed and J.B. made a new driver side fender to correct that problem. But J.B. did nothing to address the problem with the passenger side flange width. He sent me molding wax, also a piece of another fender to bound onto the passenger side fender to correct the problem. But there is a problem with that. I paid for parts that fit and work with little or no body work.

The transmission tunnel has not enough clearance. The bolts on a turbo 400 bell housing hit the firewall and tunnel. The way it is now, you would have to remove the body in order to remove the transmission or engine.

The trunk lid has two 1/8" lumps that are 3" long. They are by the hinges along the bonding areas. J.B. sends me a deck lid that is not even bonded together. Am I suppose to do all this fiberglass repair work? This is not even stock quality.

I am upset with the unprofessional way they mounted the body to my new frame. The frame had all the stock mounting holes using 3/8"x 16 fasteners. They could have drilled the holes in the body's floor in the stock locations, not just drill holes anywhere and thread bolts in. A bolt was snapped off and not removed and the two bolts in the toe box areas where fiber glassed over making it a nightmare to remove the body. J.B.'s excuse was "I didn't charge you for mounting the body to the frame."

J.B. cut the floor board up without asking me. Instead he just did it and then sent me pictures after the fact. I have a Triangulated Four Link that is replacing the upper links. There was no need to cut the floor up. Again supplies are sent to do this repair work.

The windshield doesn't sit flat in the opening as the distortion in the opening holds it out about a good 7/8" on each side. It appears that the roof line at the top of the windshield is warped holding the glass out. I was told by J.B. that they corrected that problem by placing steel in that front roof area by the windshield when molding the body.

There is no reason why anyone should have to address these types of problems. When you pay $10760.00 for the J.B. Donaldson 1936 Ford body.
I asked for the body to be exchanged for a new one with all the problems addressed. J.B. refused.
J.B. wants to repair the body I have and wants me to pay $1208.00 to ship the body too and from AZ. He said this was splitting the cost. It only cost me $500.00 to get it here the first time around. I don't feel I should have to lay out one dime to have any of the problems fixed. I paid for a body with no problems!!!
For reference my body is Mfg. # 9
Don Accavallo's 36 Ford is Mfg. #11

1.0/5.01.0/5.01.0/5.01.0/5.01.0/5.0   JB DONALDSON IS NOT A MAN OF HIS WORD!!!!
Reviewer: DON ACCAVALLO from VERMONT     July 09, 2002
IT'S TRUE JB DONALDSON IS NOT A MAN OF HIS WORD!! I SAY THIS AFTER HAVING PURCHASED A 1936 FORD 3 WINDOW COUPE FROM HIM, WITH A PROMISE THAT I WOULD HAVE MY BODY IN APPROX. 15 WEEKS. I SENT HIM MY MONEY. I THINK BY THE TIME I GOT THE BODY IT WAS SOMEWHERE IN THE VACINITY OF 32 WEEKS.

THE DELIVERY TIME WASN'T BAD ENOUGH BUT WHEN MY BODY ARRIVED WITH THE INTERIOR PACKAGE THAT THEY OFFER, WHICH I HAD A BROCHURE OF, THE PACKAGE I GOT WAS NOTHING LIKE THE BROCHURE, IT WAS THE WORST UPHOLSTERY JOB I HAVE EVER SEEN. IN FACT I TOLD JB HIMSELF THAT THE PERSON WHO DID THIS JOB SHOULD BE ARRESTED FOR INPERSONATING AN UPHOLSTERER. BUT BEING THE FAIR MINDED PERSON THAT I THINK I AM I CALLED A LOCAL UPHOLSTER THAT I FOUND OUT ABOUT FROM OTHER CAR OWNERS (AFTER I HAD ORDERED THIS INTERIOR) WHOM I DID NOT KNOW NOR HAD I EVER HAD ANY DEALINGS WITH. THIS PERSON CAME AND LOOKED AT THE JOB AND WAS APPAULED AT WHAT SHE SAW. SHE SAID IT WAS THE WORST JOB SHE HAD EVER SEEN INCLUDING UPHOLSTERY JOBS DONE BY CAR OWNERS THAT DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THEY WERE DOING.

THERE WERE TEARS IN THE CARPET, THE HEADLINER YOU COULD SLIDE TWO FINGERS IN BETWEEN THE WINDSHIELD GARNISH MOULDING AND THE HEADLINER, HUGE SHEET METAL SCREWS WERE USED TO HOLD THE DOOR AND WINSHIELD GARNISH MOULDINGS IN PLACE. THE SEAT WAS THE WORST, THE PLEATS DIDN'T LINE UP. THE SEAT HORIZONTAL SEAM WAS 1/2" OFF FROM EACH OTHER JUST TO NAME A FEW THINGS.

JB ALSO TOLD ME WHEN I WAS PURCHASING THIS BODY ONE OF THE THINGS HE WAS MOST PROUD OF WAS THE GAS FILLER SYSTEM, YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO HAVE YOUR FILL CAP ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAR. NEAT HUH? WELL, AFTER NUMEROUS PHONE CALLS AFTER MY BODY FINALLY ARRIVED TO ASK WHERE THIS INGENIOUS GAS FILL SYSTEM WAS I STILL DON'T HAVE IT AND IT'S BEEN OVER TWO MONTHS.

IF YOU CALL JB DONALSON AND ASK HIM HOW GOOD HIS BODIES ARE HE WILL GO ON AND ON AS TO HOW FINE A FIBERGLASS BODY THEY MAKE AND THAT MANY PEOPLE DON'T EVEN PAINT THEM, OH MY GOD I CAN'T EVEN BELIEVE HE WOULD TELL SUCH A STORY, I HAVE HOURS AND HOURS OF BODY SEAMS TO SAND.

PLEASE PLEASE BEFORE YOU EVER THINK OF BUYING ANYTHING THAT J.B. DONALDSON CO. SELLS CALL ME AND LET ME SEND YOU PICTURES OF WHAT I PAID ALMOST $ 18,000 FOR.

TO BE FAIR HE DID OFFER ABOUT $400-$500 TO THE UPHOLSTERER TO FIX SOME OF THE THINGS THAT ARE WRONG BUT IT WAS SUCH A LITTLE AMOUT COMPARED TO WHAT IT WOULD REALLY COST TO FIX, I WOULDN'T LET HIM BUY ME FOR THAT MEASLY AMOUT.
