01 Crown vic getting an 04 cobra engine swap; tips?

I'm helping out a buddy with an engine swap and I have to admit with all of my GM knowledge, I don't know much about the blue ovals. At any rate, he has an 01 crown vic and he just bought a complete 04 supercharged cobra engine/harness/computer. I know it will be a basic bolt-in, but are there any specific things I'll have to look out for? Incompatibilities with the new computer and the older vic's dash? Any help I can get to help him make this swap smooth would be appreciated.

If you need a test driver, let me know. :D

Me first :) He's looking at 390 hp stock, and planning a pulley swap on the SC along with headers. Might push 450 pretty easy.

I know for sure that you have to change out the gauge cluster in a normal F-150 when swapping in a lightning engine (97+ and 2nd gen L of course). It's worth looking into more...I recommend www.svtperformance.com. Someone there should know...I know I've seen the swap before.

Thanks for the link. It looks like a great forum, but the admin has disabled registration for some reason.

So lemme start with a few questions about his 01 P71 vic:
Which tranny does he have in that vic?
Which rear? 8.8?

From what I've seen they put a t-56 in it and I'm not sure on the rear, but I know I would throw a 8.8 in and call it a day. About how much does a crown vic weigh?

Gotta be somewhere around 4000. My Impala SS is 4030 I think.

What tranny comes stock in a P71 vic, and what rear comes in a vic?

They came with an 8.8 stock. the cobra also has a n 8.8 but its an independent rear. I cant remember if they came with a 4r75 or a 4r100. I believe its the 4r75 though.

I would think that the stock tranmission should be the 4R100, which is the heavy duty Ford overdrive automatic. However, they may have used the light duty 4R70W with a 4.6 engine.

The 4R100 is internally similar to the Ford C-6 (used with high HP engines in the 60s and 70s), but the 4R100 includes overdrive and is computer controlled.

The 4R100 was used with the supercharged F150 Lightning, so it should hold up to the HP of the Cobra engine.

Actually, the 4r100 used in the s/c lightnings are not normal 4r100's. They are beefed up with the 7.3 diesel trans internals. I know this because it was one of my questions to be svt certified. Also, the lightning never got a cobra motor, the lightning is a 2 valve motor while cobras are 4 valves.

I'm pretty familiar with the 4r100s strengths and weaknesses so hopefull that's whats in it. We were just going to go ahead and install as-is for now, but a friend of a friend said that he's seen the light-duty tune on a 4r100 go belly up pretty quickly at 400 hp. At least we know that there are plenty of hi-po options for it. I'll ask some questions over in the tranny forum for the rest of that discussion.

Any other ideas on the electronic side of this swap? computer? gauges? Will I need the cobra gauges? Is it the same computer with different tuning, or a whole different animal?
