.030 over 350 vortec

Hi all, I have a 350 vortec in a 97 4x4 that I had punched out .030, heads shaved, milled for larger springs, and a 258hr-12 comp cam. Now the motor doesn't have as much torque as it did when stock, the cam seems to come on @ 3k to 35k, any ideas? I checked other forums and people that have this cam say it gives loads of low end torque?? thanks in advance!!

Verify the cam phasing and the ignition timing.

Have you had your programming re-vamped? Have a 96 chevy with a vortec. Decided to put some aluminum heads,1.6-1 roller tips to give it A full roller valve train,a set of headers and noticed a very slight gain in power. Then I programmed it and son of a ***** what a difference! Even with just a hypertech max energy programmer. You might wanna swap out the poppet injectors for the replacement ones cause they cause problems and won't support anything more than 375-380 hp and they don't even do that well.

Thanks for the insight, I have checked initial timing it's good. Coppertop you said to reprogram..As in chip it? I asked the builder about that earlier and he,said with the cam as short as it is that it wouldn't need a chip. I asked him also if he had degreed it and he just looked at me..lol, he is friend just helping me out, (sigh)
So, even if the cam is straight up it should do better, I guess chipping is in it's future. Appreciate the thoughts!!

You are running headers right? And reprogramming is needed.

You do need to confirm the cam timing. I had a friend who installed a cam in his 360 Mopar and did not degree it in. He installed it straight up dot to dot. Which I confirmed when I took it apart. The cam card recommended a 111 intake centerline. When I checked it the cam centerline was actually 121 degrees. 10 degrees retarded. It was a new cam with a new timing set so even though the installation was correct something in the tolerance stack was off. His engine had some of the same symptoms. A cam that should pull good down low but didn't start pulling until high rpm's.

Yes you must reprogram it. You have more displacement, more compression, and more cam, but the computer is still controlling it like it's a stock low compression 350.

Yes engineczar..I still haven't found out if this cam has advance ground in it, but I see that degreeing will have to be done and/or a chip. Thanks for the thoughts!!
