you know, I'd be quite willing to pay what a whole set of heads cost for _good_ work, even if I had to supply the parts, and $300 for that work would be a no brainer, you just can't get it locally.

FWIW, along those lines, from what I've seen with the aerohead stuff, they do quite nice work, and then when you consider new stainless valves, they supply the cores... all for $400, and will do any custom work you want for quite cheap, they are hard to beat, I just wish they were local, I could port/clean up a set of castings and drop them off for the same work...

I drill and roll pin the rocker studs. Costs pennies. (screw in studs and guide plates+machining will blow the budget)
I lengthen the pushrod slot in the head for 1.6 rockers by hand with a
5/16 rat tail file in a drill. .530-.550" lift ready.
If I use 1.6 rockers its on the intake side only, most of the time.
I select cam and rocker combos that give .500" to .530" net lift at the valve.
crappy heads need overlap and compression.
Not going to get far without the porting.

I bring them in stripped down and already tapped for screw in studs, and he does his head work in batches as he sells about 4-5 sbc engines a week. Also does all the work out his house has a real nice shop there, my other machinist has the same style of deal. Its all about knowing what you want and not having to pay for the frills.

I could charge next to nothing if I worked out of my house. That way my wife could subsidize all the cut-rate labor I do. And overhead? Heck who cares about that.

Ya still get what ya pay for.

And what ya work for.
