1 shot pinstripe concerns

Just painted my steel wheels with SPI silver base. I want to add a red pinstripe around the wheel lip with my bugler roller pinstripe tool and use red one shot painters enamel. I have heard rumors the red one shot will bleed when I SPI UV clearcoat over the base and pinstripe. How can I prepare or prevent this from happening?

A light dusting coat for your first coat then follow with build up coats !

The letter on my race car was one shot enamel the next day sprayed SPI HS clear with no problems.

I was told the red one shot painters enamel pin stripe would bleed when spraying the clear.....someone else said I should add fish eye remover in it ?????? not sure why.

I will stripe, let it sit a day, then clear lightly @ 1st.

I like to use the 1Shot hardener, although some folks use the same cat the clear coat uses, just a few drops in your paint cup,or dip your brush while palleting and the 1Shot 6000 reducer for palleting then a couple of mist coats and then the final coats. Clears not requiring reducers are also preferred. I dont know if a Bugler needs reduced paint or not? If you dont already have the paint why not go with a striping Urethane? I know the HOK quality has gone down hill but I hear Dupont now has a striping urethane and then there is also X-otic which I have used and liked. Al

nice looking wheels Rusty. Does the SPI HS require a reducer? I haven't had problems (knock on wood) but many people have had clears cause 1 shot to bleed or craze. One line of thought is it is more the fault of the reducer in the clear than the clear itself. AL

You don't reduce SPI clears just add activator.

I waited 3 days to let the 1 shot pinstripe dry before clearing the wheels. I'm bummed to say the red pinstripe bled and krinkled. I think I sprayed the clear to heavy.

Sorry to hear that Mark. Yeah, a heavy clear job can melt it sad to say.
I've not had too much experience with One Shot and use HOK generally but if you saw my "mailbox" at SPI,it was done with one shot and it was rock hard after 1 day.I was sanding it with 1000 to knock it down and was going to use reducer to finish wiping it off with as I used reducer initally and it was not really touching it,so I was sanding it down to remove the most of it but I never got to finish it.LOL.....
I palleted my brush with thinner first and worked the one in and then worked more thinner into it so's it's not quite a thick as straight out of the can. That might have been the difference,I don't know.

For what it's worth, Dupont is supposed to be introducing a pinstriping urethane in Sept. I already talked to my rep and he said he would order me a couple of cans for a try out. They are supposed to have 20 colors that replicate the 1Shot colors. Could be interesting, HOK has been getting some bad raps lately as well as the 1Shot as far as the quality going downhill. I have used the X-otic striping urethane and had good luck with it and quality seems to be consistant. I guess the HOK black in particular has turned to crap, maybe a bad batch? AL

Another thing, when I intend to clear over 1 Shot I pallet in the 1Shot hardener, some folks use the same cat they are going to use in their clear and I also reduce the paint with 1 Shot 6000 reducer instead of mineral spirits. AL

Thanks for the support guys. The pinstripe is on the vertical edge of the rim lip. The problem is I couldn't get a even coat of clear on both the Vert and Horz surface sitting flat on the paint table. I noticed the horizontal part of the rim was thin so I made some extra passes, this added more clear to the vertical edge and melted the stripe. If I would've waited a day and hit it with another coat then.........I'm sure it would be fine. Oh well. Live and learn. I set the wheels out in the hot sun to cure hoping the solvent will evaporate and the stripe will settle. The final product is not as perfect as I wanted, but most others wont know.

Using 1-shot hardener (nr.4007) make it cure much faster and you can clear it the next day, applying first a very thin coat, let it flash and add your other coats of clear.
