Question 10 bolt or 12 bolt rearends ?

Hello
I have a few questions for the board.
1- HP rating of the 10 bolt rearends?
2-cost effectiveness of beefed up existing 10 bolt rearend or have custom 12 bolt rearend built.
3- Places to have 10 bolt rearend built or parts?
Thanks

Don`t under estimate the 10 bolt. I have seen a 17 year old car run 12.1 with the chevy 9 bolt, nitrous and a little more. ( The 9 was supposed to be weaker ).

If we are doing a street/strip car.... the 10 bolt is fine. Put fattys on...go with a 12 bolt.

A Mustang mechanic told me 350 HP with the Chevy 10 bolt.

In my opinion.....torque will break the 10 bolt..not horse power.

My 10 bolt build up with 3:73`s and posi cost $1000.

You can do a 12 bolt for $2000.

Unless its to radical I"d get a 8.5 inch 10 bolt they are almost as strong as the 12 bolt but can be found dirt cheap in every wreckers.

10 bolt vs.12 bolt

hi, you didnt say whether your 10 bolt is an 8.5 or an 8.2, if its original its an 8.2. 1971 was about the first year 8.5 were made , i ran into this problem with my 70 chevelle, the 8.2 rear is weak, very easy to break but 8.5 is almost as strong as a 12 bolt. i have both rears, but im putting the 10 bolt 8.5 in my car, selling my 12 bolt, and junking all 3 of my 8.2's. hope this helps you, jack
