10 bolt axle questions

Ok, I just bought an 88 K5 (full size) Blazer with a TBI 350, a 700r4 tranny and 10 bolt axles. My question is: Is it worth beefing up and putting a posi in the 10 bolt rear axle or should I swap for a posi 12 bolt? It will see most of its abuse off road but I want to be able to burn some rubber without worring about blowing it up. What other driveline upgrades should I do? Thanks.

There are good points and bad points for the subject of trading the 10 bolt 8.5 inch for the 12 bolt 8.875 inch.

As far as their individual strength, it is nearly equal as far as the housings are concerned.

For off road capability, stick with the 10 bolt, but you have a tire size limitation of 35 inches. Sure it will physically hold a 44 but the stresses caused by large tires have a huge effect on a stock axle housing.

You might look into adding gussets and braces to help support the housing.

Anything more and you should just look for a 14 bolt rear (the full floater) and a Dana 60 front.

Thank you, I plan on running 33's so it sounds like I'll just put better axles and a good posi (eaton or detroit locker). Is there anything else that needs to be beefed up?
