Looks like a GM 8.2 or 8.5 to me.

8.5" 10-Bolt with Open Carrier. Ratio is stamped on Ring Gear, 41-12 = 3.42 etc...
How wide is it Wheel Mounting surface to WMS? If 58" it's out of a G-Body, wider would be a B-Body. *H209* probably July-20th,89 would be a B-Body. Look on the Axle Tube for code: Location >> http://tech.oldsgmail.com/axle_useage.php http://www.gnttype.org/numbers/axcodes.html Last edited by SSedan64; 12-13-2011 at 04:19 PM. |

Noob questions
Ok, I'll go with that. 8.5 10 bolt Open carrier. Looks like all the material I pulled up on it, thanks a lot! Now, can someone or a group of someones educate me on this rear end? I have no idea if this is a good rear end or not. From what I've read, its good. But I would like some real input, not internet answers. Thanks from the newbie!!!

Unlike the 7.5" and 8.2" 10-Bolt, the 8.5" 10-Bolt is a very strong Rear.
The 8.5" has the same 1.625" diameter Pinion as the 8.875" 12-Bolt. The 8.5" comes stock with 28 & 30-spline Axles & Carriers, 28-spline can be upgraded to 30-spline Carrier & Axles. The 8.5" Ring Gear is only .375" or 3/8" smaller than the 8.875" 12-Bolt Rear. A Girdle Cover is another strength upgrade. http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/te...all/index.html What other Info do you need? Maybe I or someone else can help find it. Todd |

![]() i'm not sure but it looks like the 7.5" with the fangs in the third pic. Do you have a better view of that area? Do you know what the rear came out of? |

It looks like a Buick Olds Pontiac 10 bolt out of an early A body car. are the axles retained with C clips? it they are its a chevy rear, if not its the BOP. looks identical to the rear in my 67 pontiac tempest. its a decent rear with good aftermarket support.

The date code (H209) will make this a '69 rear end. There should be a code stamped into the axle tube. |
