A friend of mine is selling his 1987 stang for $100. No, I did not forget a 0. However, the engine's a four-banger piece o'crap and will need to be replaced. The auto-transmission only does first and reverse, so that will have to go too. Question, is it worth the money to redo the engine and tranny from junkyard parts, or is it more trouble than it's worth. Assuming it's worth the time and money, how much money am I looking to invest before it's even drivable. Also, since I'm going to go check it out tomorrow (04/29), what should I be looking out for?
Well a V8 is a given. It's sacrilegious to have anything less in a mustang. I'm wondering though, how much time and money am I looking to invest to replace the engine and tranny. Preferably as fast and cheaply as possible to get it drivable. And again, is it worth it for that specific car.
Lets look at what you want to do. You want to take a car that has a fuel injected 4 banger and change the engine and trans to a V-8. That will involve changing the electrical under the hood, the computer, probably mounts, radiator, and exhaust. The springs will likely be too light and need to be changed. Your best bet would be to get aq donor car to use for parts. Time wise, don't be in a hurry. It's going to take some time. If you are going to a salvage yard, be prepared to spend some serious money. This is not something to be in a hurry to jump into.
drop in a 2.3L turbo motor into it. basically the same size as whats in there because it has a N/A 2.3 in it now. the turbo motor should make it scoot with only a few mods. try going to www.turboford.org they know whats up. later
It sounds like a lot of work and you'll need a doner 5.0 car to make the swap less expensive than buying the parts one piece at a time. Might be better off looking for a 5.0 car to begin with or go with the turbo 2.3L. Anything can be done but it all depends on the 3T's--talent, time, I forget the third one?? OH yea TOOLS!
yes there worth it. They build those four bangers with turbos and putt out more torque and horsepower then the v8's. It all depends on the type of cars you like, if you like four bangers there definently worth it. If the body is in good condition then go for it, otherwise i wouldnt waist your time and money.
