11 spline 1.5" shaft
hay guys, im trying to mate a 32 pontiac 3 speed manual trans to a mid 70's GM 10 bolt.
on the back of the trans has a bolt on adapter plate.
one side is splined into the tail shaft to the transmission, and retained by a bolt and a cotter pin. (that extrudes past the surface of the flange)
the other side is a casting, which has an old style U joint within it. and the other side of the U joint has a 11 spline 1.5" female yoke.
my questions are,
was a 32 pontiac (im sure same as chevy) a open or closed driveshaft/torque tube?
ive been told many a times that ill probally have to make it, if so where can i get a splined shaft that will fit that yoke?
is there a better way to go about this? mabe a flange that someone makes that will accept a modern style u-joint?
and if ya tell me to use a better trans, ill tell you to provide the parts, :thumbup:
Can you seperate the U-joint portion and adapt to a newer joint from there back?
If not what is the spline count of the output shaft of the transmission, and can you have something fabricated from that point.
It looks as if you are going to have to have some part fabricated, but like you stated, you already have the transmission.
i thought about replacing that u-joint with a plate, drilled out to the bolt pattern, and then welding the driveshaft ears on it. but if i do that, then there is 0 ammount of slippage between the rearend and tranny.. and in my experience, thats askin for trouble!
i think mabe the best way is to take this adapter off and use it like a regular trans, but i havnt taken that adapter off, i will tonight to see whats goin on.
my plan is of now to use the old adapter, and trying to find a splind shaft and
welding it to a normal driveshaft tube . so the front is a fixed shaft and the rear has the ears for the U-joint.
dont really like that plan, but whatever gets me around Paso Robles 06!!!
You could always use a truck style driveshaft with the self contained slip yoke on the shaft.
As long as you have a place to bolt a universal joint to the output of the transmission.
Here's what you thought you needed (on top), with what you might be able to use on bottom:
i took the adapter off the engine tonight, and i might beable to turn the bolt flange off and weld a set of driveshaft ears on it. if i can... i got that modification in the bag!!!
