12 bolt truck rear end puzzle

How do you count splines on axles? The ones in this 12 bolt truck rearend (3896839) (shortened with a spool aka 513 gears) has just 17 splines and 17 gruves. So what posi unit would fit. Most advertize 28,31 or 33 spline.
Can someone explain the spline count to me. Cannot find any type of axle spline like this ,if this is correct. I even wrapped it with paper then rubbed it with a pencil so to get accurate count. I have counted spline on 4 speeds. Cannot figure out what to do. This is on my latest project car. VW beetle 327/turbo400/forty ford nose/Straight axle, disc all round. I just do not care for a spool. Thanks MiMax

To count spinles, you simply count the number of high parts(splines) or the axles. 17 splines doesnt sound correct at all for any axle I have heard of.

there is NO math needed whatsoever.

The math is used for calculating gear ratios.

The H072 has 17 spline axles. To my knowledge, the last year they were installed under a GM pickup was in 1971 on the 3/4 ton and higher rated pickups/trucks. It's ancient and was used for years, dating back to the mid-late 40s if I remember correctly. It was full floating axle with 8 lug hubs. It had both a removable rear cover and dropout center section. It's very distinct looking. If you have this, or something similar to it, you're probably going to have a hard time finding parts for it and it's going to be expensive. I priced a ring and pinion for one a couple years ago and it was $430. You could call Randy's Ring and Pinion in Seattle, WA and they could help you solve your question. www.ring-pinion.com

My 72 Blazer has a good 'ol 12 bolt and it has 30 spline axles. What year truck did the axle come from? If this is a 12 bolt then somebody, for whatever reason, may have cut a funky spline into it.

Nope no idea. It was used for about 25 years though. It's ancient by todays standards. They also have a ~12 1/4" ring gear.

Here are some various pictures of H072s and H052s I found on Google... http://s14.photobucket.com/albums/a3.../Eaton%20H072/
