14102187 casting 305 head modification,outperform a 350 head ???

Hi i have a friend of mine that bought 14102187 heads supposedly from a Vortec,i found out that this heads are 305 as far as i have reserarched.-
This are intented for a 350 engine and i was told they will kill performance
but they are porting them and installing 1.94 valves,64cc,and 185 runner.-
Will this head job outperform a 350 head ?
I think my friend is wasting money doing this head job and he better buy a decent set .-

What you think ? Pro's and Con's ???
thanks !
Sammy

These heads are "swirl port" heads, they have a swirl vane in the intake valve bowl. These are some of the worst flowing sbc heads. They make explosive low end torque but are pretty much dead by 4000 RPM.

this was a common head found on the '87-up 305 TBI trucks, for example. in which i have owned a few of, and junked.

very bad flowing heads yes.

he would be best off with 14014416 heads and such if he has to have a 305 head. 58 cc and probably are the best flowing older 305 head

other than some later TPI ones maybe

good luck

I have a scrap pile of TBI heads that I donate to the local tech school to let kids practice porting. They are pretty wheezy. The amount of effort it would take just to get them to flow as well as a smogger head from the 70s-80s is pretty involved.

Just junk them and get better heads. They can be made to perform, but probably one of the worst starting points.
