144 Big Block Chevy Blower. Is it a good deal?

Gents,

I am getting ready to go and look at a 144 B&M blower for a rectangular port BBC with a Holley carb. The guy is willing to throw in a bunch of other parts (Accell coil, valve covers, air filter, Holley fuel pump, boost gauge, fuel pressure gauge, etc.) with it. The blower has the intake and the pulley for the snout but is missing the belt, the idler pulley and the crank pulley. He is asking $1700 for the whole thing. I am going to get the numbers on the Holley (he doesn't know what it is).

What should I check for on the blower to make sure it is ok (assuming there is something I can check)? Never inspected one before and wanted to ask the professionals here.

Thanks.

Brent

I wouldn't use such a small displacement blower on a BBC. Even if you do wind it up tight enough so that there will be boost in the manifold, I suspect the air would be hot and thin. That may be what the current owner of this pile of parts has discovered and now he's looking to pawn it off on some unsuspecting rodder. I might use it on a SBC, but not a BBC. Caveat Emptor.

The 177 is the smallest I've used on a BBC and it only works correctly on very mild engine.

Tech,

Thanks for your input. The guy sems pretty legit. Said its been setting on the shelf for 20 years. He was running it in a 61 Vette with a 454 but said he had temp issues. Also said he was running too small of a radiator.

The carb is a 800 DP.

My intent was just to turn around and sell the thing if you guys thought it was a decent deal at maybe $1400.

Bob,

How can you tell the difference between a 144 and 177?

Here is a pic.

The number 8900300 is on the bottom of the intake (it's an oval port not rectangular port) and the numbers 3178 are stamped into the bottom of the blower.
