1923 steering
if anyone can help me i have 1923 t-bucket that when i go down the car will start to shimmy all over the road at different speeds. if anyone out there can help me or point me in the right direction i would appreciate it. thanks 08-14-2002 09:25 AM

Assuming all your king pins, rod ends and steering gear are in EXCELLENT shape (0.000 slop anywhere), check your toe-in (measurement between tires in front should be about 1/8" smaller, maybe more). Also, is there enough caster in your axle - the kingpins should tilt noticeably to the rear. I don't know a good number for a T-bucket but look at top fuel dragsters; they are at 14 or 15 degrees, 'cause they can't afford not to go straight at 350mph.

All else fails, go to an alignment shop, preferably one who works on hot rods, and let them figure it out. Smarter people would have lead with this advice but I like doing eveything myself, even though I usuall do it at least twice!

I had the same trouble on my T-bucket. I raised the air pressure to 30 lbs. (I was running about 15), re-tightened the wheel bearings, checked all the drag link, and tie rod connections, DECREASED the caster to aout 4 degrees, set the toe-in to 1/8" and it went away. Don't know which one of them it was, or if it was a combination of them. I've also heard that the toe-in will vary depending on whether you are running radial or bias-ply tires.

Hope this helps, shimmy isn't fun!!

If all else fails, try adjusting the tie-rod for 1/8" toe-out.
