1926 Chevy 4 cylinder? help!

Hey everyone,
I posted this up earlier, and I was told to bring it to the engine forum, so here it is, sorry if you already read it in the lounge.

A friend of mine just bought an old Chevy 4 cylinder motor, and he's looking to get some more information on it, so I figured here would be the best place to find motor information! The guy he bought it from said it was a 1926 chevy, and he thought they ran it in an airplane (upside down and backwards, so they could run the prop right off the crank), but it still has the bellhousing so we don't think that's right. The serial number cast into the motor is 4456449. If anyone knows anything about these motors, could you let us know? thanks a bunch! Here are some pictures of the motor, and since I was taking pictures in the shop, I have one to throw in of the hot rod:

thanks in advance for all the help!

~Frank~

What you have there, is a 171 cubic inch, overhead valve Chevy 4 cylinder that was used from 1924-1928. It came with a standard bore of 3 11/16" and a 4" stroke. Horsepower was in the 22-26HP range. Your motor has a modified stock intake. From the factory, it came with a single updraft carb. The serial number is high for a '26. My bet would be that it is a '28. Not much of that info around to be sure though. Dan

Hey Dan,
Thank you very very much!! We knew the intake was modified, it came with an original stock one too, with only one carb, instead of two. Thanks again for all the great info, it helps a ton!
