I have found a 39 buick to build, but it has no title. Does anyone have info on location of vin and the way michigan handles lost titles?

I had a 39 Chevy and had trouble with the title. I found out that the Vin was the serial number on the block according to WI. That may be the same for Buick's. I got my 48 Chrysler without a title, and got too busy to track it down and lost track of the guy I bought it from. I tried a title search with the DMV but they only go back so far. I was told to provide the last ten years of history for my 48 and they would let me file for a lost title if no claims were found on it. I've had it in my garage for the last 11 years so when the cash flow is right I'll be able to get a title. You need to check with your DMV and see what the laws are in your state, I was able to find more info on WI titles from the online site. You may be able to find out all you need the same way. Do yourself a favor and document all the info for your own records as memory fails over time. Good luck and enjoy your Buick, I always liked the front on that year.

Your Serial Number (not vin), can be found on the right frame side rail under the hood. It will start with a 1-, 2- or 3-

If you look on the Hemmings Motor News web site there are sources for getting a new title for a couple of bucks. They are also advertisers in Old Car Weekly. If you cannot find these birds give me a shout I have plenty of copies at home.... GOOD LUCK... DAVE

Michigan is one of the easiest states to get a title for an old car. 6 years or older/$2500 or less declared value, or pre 1984. . If you locate the vin no. Go to SEC of State and get a TR-54 (green sheet). Take the car to your local police dept and have them fill out only the top section of the form. Take the car to a public scale, (grain elevators, scrap yards, steel supplier, or others) get a weight figure on paper. Take this to Sec of State and apply for a title. The state "purges" the liscence/title portion of their records as early as three-four years and if the car hasn't been titled/registered for a while and isn't in the computer. They will issue you a new title. Tell them you are the owner of the car. Title was destroyed.
