Hi there what I would like to know is what would be the best window wiper unit that would fit my 85 master with the least amount of work. New or donor vehicle preferably British or Japanese as these are the easiest to find here in NewZealand Thanks

pudsey66 I don't know if it will fit a 39 Chevy but the hot system I've seen used in a few rods around here is from the VW Rabbit.

Hi there.I'm working on a 39 Chevy as well.I got the wiper assembly out of a VW Rabbit for mine.It centers in the Chevy wiper holes in the cowl without any modification.Just have to weld a pipe in the cowl to run the wiper shaft thru and tighten down the nut on.Put one little bracket from the motor to the bracket under the dash.Finding nice wiper arms is the next big headache.I've tried shortening, an reshaping the VW ones, but still don't like them real good, and not sure who sells billet arms that will fit the metric spline. If your `39 wiper towers are good I would recommend a Newport Wiper Kit. It is a simple replacement, remove original vacuum motor, the new 2 speed electric motor bolts in using the existing holes,comes with prewired switch that fits existing switch hole.No modifications at all works great.

I have a '39 master and I filled the original wiper post. I bought an aftermarket wiper unit and mounted it about my windshield.

MG and Jaguar units, as well as most Austins, are easy to modify. These units have posts that clamp to a cable. The cable has ridges that mesh with a gear on the base of the post. It works like a rack and pinion -- the cable is the rack. The motor has a round piece on the shaft with the end of the cable mounted on the edge and the shield mounted on the motor body. As the round piece turns, the cable goes in and out. The motor mounts to one side, not the center. The posts can be removed and turned upside down to make the wipers move to and away from each other (like many vacuum systems) instead of side to side. The only problem might be getting a cable long enough, though that sholdn't be a big problem with late 30s vehicles. The cables are easy to shorten. I've seen systems transferred from mid 80s Jaguar XJ6s and even from a Nash Metropolitan (license built for Nash by Austin).
