Post 1947 Ford Convertible

What is the purpose of the springs attached to top mechanism on both sides, in the rear attached to the body boxes?

Top Mechanism, body boxes? If we're under the hood, you'll find the hinges at the back corners with 2 arms on each side bolted to the hood. The arms with springs are called hood supports as they are what holds the hood up when you lift it on the hinges into the open position.
If you're talking about the convertible top, I'm doing some more research in my service bulletins.
Terminology is what makes auto communication difficult.
