1950 chev belair

this car is still orig and has a generator. 6v system but is ground positive or negative?

It's a negative ground.

yes he is right i have a 1950 widsor also 6v and it has a negative ground.

I think I read somewhere that GM was positive ground on their 6 volt systems. I would check that out carefully. I know that my 46 was, but I am not sure if they changed in the 50's..... GlennK

Cadillac & LaSalle were the only GM cars that were positive ground, and 1942 was the last year. After WW2 Cad. went negative. ALL other GM's, Chev, Buick, Olds, and Pontaic were always negative ground. If you had a 46 GM car that was positive ground, the battery was in backwards.

Negative ground for sure. I'd hang an alternator on it - it's a real piece-O-cake and well worth the effort.
