I regularly drive my '51 with a '74 Nova clip and it works great. We installed the clip in 1988--I've owned the truck since 1976. I also am finishing up another chassis with the same kind of clip for use in a 1/2 ton panel.

Yes, the subframes are a lot of work, but if you can do your own fabrication they can be cheaper. A key point here though is to start with a sub that already has disc brakes and power steering. Yes, you can add those later, but it really drives the price up.

Another alternative would be a pre-fabricated subframe that uses Dodge Dakota (!) suspension components. It's kind of pricey but it looks like it would do the job very well. It's made by a company called Industrial Chassis out of the Phoenix area.

Just FYI...

How about a rusted gas tank

The gas tank needs some serious rust removal. Are there any tricks? Someone mentioned once that they actually cut the tank open, clean it out, and weld it back together. Thats ok as long as they don't try it in my shop - KABOOM!!
