Sorry I can't help you right now with the vin number but Monday or Tuesday I'll have some more info for you from work. I left all my books there. I've done few '55, '56 Ford Fairlanes and I can send you any info I have on them plus a few contacts for parts.
I'm doing a '56 convertable now and over the winter I'll be doing my '55 Victoria finally.

I'll answer any questions I can on those Fords.

I may be mistaken, but into the early '50's Ford used the engine serial number as the VIN number. The '56 you have is probably the same. Check the engine number against the number on the title.

You could always check at your local Ford dealership parts department. They should know where to look.

OK here goes- 56 Ford- Number located on left front door pillar.
The number consists of: An engine code letter, a model year, an asembly plant code letter, a body style code letter, a six figure consecutive unit number, in the order giver.
The engine dode letter:
6 cyl. OHV 223cu. in.- A
V8 OHV 272 cu. in. - U
V8 OHV 292 cu. in. - M
V8 OHV 312 cu. in. - P
The Model year code for 56- 6
The only other info I have is F is Dearborn plant and H is a Thunderbird. Maybe this will give you a start.

FORD VINs 1909-50s

Ford used the engine number as the VIN number from 1909-31 covering the Model T and Model A production.
Ford used the chassis number as the VIN number from 1932-48 covering the early years of the flathead V8. Motor numbers were only stamped in engines in states which required them; it was the same number as the chassis.
Ford went to body numbers in 1949 through the time VIN tags were installed at the base of the windshields. Again, engine numbers were stamped when state requirements had to be met and were the same as body number.
