Wink 1952 Chevy car power steering box what will work?

Hi I am trying to find a way to put power steering in my 52 chev car. Right now it has the stock manual steering box. When I turn to the left the arm that comes out of the right side of the original steering box comes back towards the fire wall. I need a power steering box that will do the same. Or I need to know can a power steering box be converted to do the same?

Does the arm come out of the 'drivers side' of the box or the 'engine side'? If the former, look at the Toyota Land Cruiser box from the mid 80s. Almost a perfect replacement for the '48-'54 Chevy pickup manual box. I installed one on my '53 pickup and will post a picture when I get home tonight.

re: 1952 Chevy car power steering box what will work?

Hi. Thanks for the information. I called a place that does a lot of rebuilding of power steering boxes today and told them what I needed. If they could take a power steering box and change the direction of the out put shaft. I told him wich box I would like to use. He told me if I sent it to him he could take the insides out of a 1985 chev van power steering box and put them in the box I have and it would change the direction of the out put shaft. This is good news for me. Now all I have to do is make a mount lengthin the out put shaft arm hook it up and I am done. What a releaf to hear him say that he could do that. I have been trying to figure out every angel of atack to do this for a few monthes now. Every thing else is done on the car as far as I want to take it and I have been saving the best for last the steering problem. So I hope every thing goes as planed and it works like I want it to. If it doesnt I will definitly look at what you sugested with the land cruiser box. I found out today that I could do what I told you in this email. You have given me an idea on what to also. I am doing good all in one day. If it doesnt rain it poors. What I was afraied of is doing the convertion the hared way and having some one tell me after it was done an easy way. So I am glad I left it for the end, Thanks for the reply Mike.

FYI I posted some pictures and a short ho-to on the Toyota box installation in my Project Journal.

Sounds like a nifty solution you came up with. Sneak some pictures for us if you can.
