1953 Cadillac drivetrain options

I've come from the early watercooled VW world, and just recently parted my Corrado in search of a car the whole family can enjoy.

I picked up a 1953 Cadillac Series 62 4dr, with minimal rust and some body damage. It is original and complete with the original 331 V8 and 3spd Hydroglide. The engine turns over, but does not start, I'm assuming bad gas and/or bad carb.

After some research, parts for the 331 and Hydroglide are pretty much unobtainium, and I also want to get away from the 6v system to a 12v.

So, my question, after all that is, what would be an affordable drivetrain (staying carbed) that would make a fair amount of torque to move the big girl, but have plenty of parts and aftermarket. I would prefer to stay within the GM brand.

That 331 is a good engine... keep it. Convert the car to 12v. parts are easily available from Kanter, Egge or even NAPA.

The traditional hot rod world covets these early Caddy's... keep what you have.

Here's some early Caddy posts to keep you reading for the next month or so...

hydromatic 4 speed

Caddy and olds used 4 speed hydramatic transmissions the caddy had the long tailsheft and didn't leave much space for a drive shaft when swapping into a roadster. The hydramatics modified by B & M were the choise transmission in drag cars in the 50's
