I bought a 1953 Chevy Truck in Oragan. Sent my Dad up there with a trailer to pick it up.

Did the paper work at the DMV with the title but the DMV said I need to have the Truck weight and the vin checked.

I took the Truck to the DMV after getting it weighed and they could not read the old vin tag.

The Truck had a front end clip put in years ago and I can not find any other numbers on the frame. The vin number on the tag as I read it is
H53S 010922. The vin on the Title is LBM227150

After doing a search on the internet I landed on The Stovebolt Page site and his site side this.

If you were fortunate enough to have a good title for your new purchase, great! It might even have a VIN listed (or a "serial number." But while most states titled vehicles by the VIN, some states titled by the engine serial number (found stamped in the block to the left of the distributor), which doesn't have much to do with the body serial number. As most old trucks have had the engine replaced once or twice, your title may not match your engine (if it has been replaced) and your title uses an engine number.

Advance-Design ('47-'54) and later trucks should have a plate located on the left front door post. The GVW is stamped as 46 (hundred pounds) on the '40's trucks. Don't confuse this as being the year of the truck. The serial number is not stamped on the frame of '30's, '40's, and early '50's trucks. It may be on the frame of late '50's trucks near the steering box.

Many of these plates were just screwed on from the factory (not riveted in the older trucks), and sometimes have been removed. Reproduction blank plates are sometimes available to replace lost or damaged plates. You have to stamp your own numbers on them.

Any ideas what I can do to get this truck though DMV? I want to tear it down but not before I get this title issue resolved.

Sure looks like your particular title used the engine number. Your true vin number (off the "A" pillar) looks correct for a '53. Unfortunately I think you're going to have to ask your DMV how to proceed since each state's procedures are a little different.

Look into the laws in your state as to registering it as a new construction. After all your going to rebuild it right?
Well just maybe they can issue you a new number if you reconstruct it,Some states have "Street Rod" plates now. and you would have to have the state inspector, come out and issue you a new number for that . This could work but not if you're really after having it registered as the original truck ................

I have a 56 chevy Truck that has the numbers on the frame near the streering box.

I get the feeling this is really going to s*ck.

On the web page they said many of these ID Plates have been replaced with Repoduction Blank Plates. Have any of you ever seen those? I have not.

Otherwise I am not sure what to do. If I tear into this thing and pump thousands in it and can not get it to go though DMV then I will be fire selling parts on e-bay.

I did find the reproduction plates on Jim Carters site.

I ran into the same problem with my 52. After I bought it I realized that there was not a VIN plate inside the driver door. I had to go through the courthouse county clerk where I license the truck. Not the DMV. They gave me a form to fill out stating the info they need. They sent me back a request for a notorized statement that the VIN plate was missing and a couple months later I received a new VIN plate. I think every state is different so I would go down to the court house where you get your tags and ask them what the procedure is for replacing a missing VIN plate. Here in TN you can't just buy one and put your numbers on it and stick it on. It has to be issued by the state. It took about 5 months to get mine. Wasn't hard, just took awhile to get. My tag got lost during restoration. Fell off somewhere along the path. It probably didn't have one on it for years. Our DMV didn't have anything to do with it here in TN. Went through the courthouse where I get my registration and tags.

Bought a reproduction plate on Jim Carters site, Took it to a Trophy shop and had it engraved with the number and then to DMV to regester the truck.

All the DMV wanted was to see some kind of ID on the truck so they could sign off that the truck coming into the State had a readable Vin. Number.

They wouldn't let me go that route here in TN. I was told in KY that all you had to do was affix a WIM plate and they do a visual inspection and that's that. Here they want an extra 60 bucks and 6 months to get you a plate.

Just joined this forum and I have a 57 Chevy Panel Delivery. Iowa refused to transfer the title without a DOT Inspector driving 180 miles to take a look first hand at my 9-digit vin. My door frame plate is in perfect/matching condition, but this had a Mustang II front clip installed and half of the frame stamping is covered.
A neighborhood "expert" dropped by and told me there are "many" stamped locations on this truck. Is he windy, or can somebody tell me where to look. My appointment is within 48-hours.
