1954 Pontiac Chieftain

I am looking to put a straight eight with an hydramatic transmission from a 1951 Pontiac Chieftain into a 1954 Chieftan that came with a straight six with a three speed manual. Is anyone aware if these are compatable or will there be a lot of changes involved?

I agree and after you do this task, you will be broke and disappointed.

The cars are basically the same as the big chassis change came in 55. But you will need a lot of rare factory pieces to do the swap. Hope you have the complete donor car.

You will need the engine mounts, steering column/linkage, radiator mounts, small linkage and misc parts that are hard to find and time wasting to make.

When you get done the vehicle won't be much faster than the six and just as tempermental with poor gas milage..

I'm not a Pontiac hater but there are better/cheaper alternatives. You might try a traditional type site like H.A.M.B. for parts and advise.

One of my first cars was a 57 Chieftan 2-dr hardtop in 1965. It was pink (coral) and charcoal. V-8 with the old hydra-matic. Wish it were still around..

what would I do ?

as stated above a lot of work for what you get, I would think about doing a rat rod with the old engine and trans like on the Hamb or Kill billet guys do. I would be looking for a 455 engine and th 400 to go into the car, and mabe swap in a jaguar XJS front and rear suspension. More info on the Hamb site about Jag swaps.
