A friend has a '55 Olds, and I used to have a '53 Buick. They both had the type of rearend that the third member comes out the front. I beleive my Buick also had a back cover, but not sure.
The Olds rearend is freshest in my memory.
The axles came out like a Ford 8" or 9". The axles are held into the housing by a flange that bolts to the axle ends, and does not have "C" clips.
You probably need a slide hammer or some other such tool to extract them.
