1956 Chevy sedan rear end gear ratio?

My project car is a 1956 chevy 2-dr sedan. with a 283 engine I am not sure what is the gearing ratio is at this time the rear end is a gm A56 3707306 gm 11 not sure if this is a 4.11 or what. some people say if its a 4.11 its best for me to run 700R trans with the 4.11. on the other hand if I used the 350TH I need to change the rear end to a 3.08 ratio.

Are you set on the 3.08 or would a 3.23 work?

IF it's a stock rear end, it would have come with 3.55 gears for an automatic, 3.70 gears for a standard shift, 4.11 gears for a standard shift with overdrive. n BUT, anything could be in it after all these years, owners, and modifications. You may have better luck just raising the rear wheels off the pavement and turning a tire one revolution. There are plenty of posts on how that's done, do a search. IF it's a positraction rear, both tires will turn but in the same direction, a one legger, the tires would turn opposite.

3:70 is an all around good ratio. When I was in high school (1966-69) I had a 56 2 dr sedan 283 four speed. I had two close friends who had 55's. During one summer we hit every wrecking yard we could find within 75 miles for third members from 55-57 Chevy 6 cylinder standard cars because they were all 3:70's. We all had four or five complete third members in our garages for when we broke one.
