1957 454 GMC Pickup Project

Hello, Note: I posted the same post in the Engine forum, so it is a duplicate.

It's me again, I just signed up as a new user and would like to get started right away with a few questions. Again, I'm an absolute novice, and that would be a compliment at mechanical work. However, as a pay back, I have 20 years computer experience that I'm willing to share.

Anyway here's is what I'm attempting to do. I have my wifes Grandfathers 1957 GMC truck. It is all original with a 6 cyl and a 4 speed automatic Hydromatic transmission. Maybe you know it, it doesn't have any park, you just put in reverse when you want to park it. I runs well and I have most of the body done. The interior still needs to be painted and the bed needs new oak.

1st Question:
Am I nuts to disassemble a truck that is all original. I have what appears to be a really strong 454 engine in a 1977 One Ton truck that I would like to have put in it. So, I would take out the six and put in the 454. Then I have a 4.3 motor that has 50,000 on it out of a 92 Jimmy and I thought I would have that put back into the one ton.

I've had people tell me that they would never change a truck of that vintage if it is all original. That the value of the truck would really go down. I would keep all the original stuff ie motor trans, rearend ect so that it could be reinstalled later if I or possible the new owner (which would only happen if I was dead, and then it would go to another family member).

Question 2:
What would your suggestions be as to what would be a good vehicle to use the 454 with.

Question 3:
Is anyone aware of a company that would sell motor mount kits. ie going from the current 6cyl to the 454, I think these would help keep the cost down. The local mechanic isn't aware of any and he said that it would be very expensive if he would have to fabricate them.

Question 4: (and then I'll stop, I promise)
What Transmission and rearend ect would be a good match. Any other sugguestions would also be welcomed.

Thank you for you time in considering my questions. I really appreciate the chance to talk to all of you.
