1957 ford pu rear end

Hello i have a 57 short box,223 - 6 W/ 3 on the tree, it is realy low geared , top speed 45 - 50 how do i find out what gears i have? thanks Dave

Is there any type of I.D.Tag hanging from the back cover or stamping on the housing/axles tubes?

If the rear end is original (its possible), it was the first year ford used the 9" under the trucks. Check the VIN plate and see if it has the gear ratio on it.

My 56 is the stock rear with 3.73s. That is confirmed with the tag and checking the ratio by the turning and count method. Mine (272 Y-block V8 and 3 on the tree) runs 60 with no strain at all. I assume it will run quite a bit faster, but who pushes a 50 year old truck?
