1958 235 engine
hey guys new here ,,, i have a 1958 235 Biscayne with auto ,,the problem i am having is lifters noise, i have adjusted the with the eng hot , going the firing order and i have done the running with eng hot ,, i can get them pretty good but when i let the car set a while its right back ,,now i have 40 psi oil pressure and i changed the oil and used 15w40 full syn oil ( thats what my company uses ) no oil filter dont have one ,,, what i think is i have bad lifters they bleed off ???
is there anything i can do ??
can i just replace the lifter???
or can i rebuild or clean them ??
i saw a video that a guy cleaned his dont know if its worth it ,, dont know how old the eng is or if its been rebuild its shows about 47k could be 147 dont know ,, i was going to remove the side cover and take one out and look at it , should be easy just loosen a rocker and pull the push rod and reach in and grab it from the side right ???
anyway what can you tell me and thanks for all the help

ohh here is a pic after running for 15 to 20 min

Drain that Synthetic out. No oil filter, not rebuilt, you don't have a clue on miles. That is a disaster waiting to happen when the sludge pulls thru the engine.

The lifter passages are probably not fully open from sludge caused to be loosened by the synthetic, and are not pumping up properly... Replace with some SAE 30 non detergent and some ZDDP addative, make sure passages you can get to are clean, and re-try it.

A filter setup is only $30ish on Ebay. If you want to run a modern oil, get 1, but don't run a high detergent oil or any synthetic.

It was doing before i used the syn oil,,, the milage is about 47k could be 147 k dont know ,, and it seems better with the 15w 40 i a getting oil up top faster , i guess its thinner is why its bleeding off? And how do i clean lifter passage,, by taking off rocker *** ?, do you think removeing a lifter and checking it is worth it,, or just drain and refill with 30 weight is enough,,, ohh could i blow air down through the rocker *** after i remove them is a good idea ?

Thanks for helping

It's likely an oiling problem to the lifters due to sludge. It was common problem on them to get some sludge. detergent oil pumped the sludge to the lifter passages. if it was 1 or 2 lifters, I'd say you could have a couple bad lifters, but if there all doing it, you have a restriction.. Take the lifters out and clean them up, clean the engine up, but add a filter and run Dino oil. 10w30 will be good, just make sure the oil is not HD or synthetic as it's actually too slippery for the old seals and will start to leak .. You could blow clean air thru the rockers with little issue

So 10w30 or would 30weight be ok ? I a going to take the rocker *** off and clean it and take a lifter out and see what they look like and maybe try some air down through the hole ,,, do you guys know were i can get a set of lifters if i need them,

I use SAE 30 Rotella in my '51 235, but my engine has had a filter since new I presume. You'll be good with a 10w30 or a 30W if you can find a 30w that's not high detergent, but Non detergent 30w will be best given, you don't have a filter. You could probably use SAE 20 Non detergent also.

Lifters are available but they arn't cheap

well i got a lifter out and got the rocker *** off ,,i thought oil came through the stands that hold up the *** but no i guess it comes through the small tube ( oil connector ) and travels through the rocker arm shaft and then comes out the rocker arm ,,,,, now the lifter feels strong to push i tried to push it in and couldn't ,, now there is a small hole in the side of it for some reason ??? the oil that came out rocker ***. was kinda dirty and nasty now to clean everything up and figure out the lifters here is a few pics

do you think the plunger( large arrow ) is stuck ??? cause if you see small line there is a spring , compressed i cant get the plunger apart

matt167 06-25-2012 06:34 PM

it could be stuck.

lilrobo 06-25-2012 06:49 PM

After looking harder the ball is loose you can take a straw and push that must be the check valve,, i guess its made that way,,i wish i could get my hands on a new set of lifters ,,i hate to put it all together and still have the noise ,,,

Thanks guys

Lifter noise....
Hi,i would drain the oil,add 2 qts of trans fluid,3 qts of 30 weight, start it and let it idle, the trans fluid is super hi-detergent oil, wont hurt anything, but, will clean the snot out of that engine.
