1958 chevy biscayne project

Hey everyone, My name is TERRY, i just bought a 1958 chevy biscayne project car, its a 4 door, power nothing... my problem is i can't seem to identify the engine... on the boss in the front pass side of the block is the following F1222GF according to the local part houses this isn't the original engine... it has a rochester 2 barrel although that will tell me nothing of the block size... think its a 283 but doesn't match with any info i can find.... can anyone help?? Need something to go on before ordering parts for the beast.. thanks for anyone who can provide me with some input.. TERRY email though@cfl.rr.com

Welcome to Hotrodders. As far as I know or can remember....only two V-8's were available in the 58 Chevies....283 and 348. The 348 is a larger block and has large odd shaped valve covers. Best to ask over in the Engine forum.

1958 biscayne project Engine I.D.

Back in the day, I do remember that the blocks that started with an "F" was a 327 cu. in. I would call a dealer to verify. John

1958 CHVYS came with 3 engine options

Want to thank those who responded to my engine questions, according to GM in 1958 the only offered 3 versions of the 283 for the biscayne, one was a carbed engine and the others were fuelies, i'm pretty sure mines the 283 carbed version but the #s still are kind of iffy, on the boss the number is this; F1222GF now i found everthing except the letters GF ?? i have the 2 choke pull offs on this intake which seems to be a later version than the 58 intake... got my hands full with these pull-offs as the one on the side of the carb is a coiled up spring type and of course its broken... noone can seem to help me get the replacement part. I did get a reman carb today and am still searching for the correct pull off. If someone has a source, please inform me.. i took some photos of it and can email it to a supplier. Thanks from a new member.. TERRY though@cfl.rr.com

Hey Terry.... welcome to the forum....

Are you having a problem identifying the engine size or if it is the original Eng. for the car? There should be a tag on the driver side firewall that lists all of the car information. My 1957 210 sedan has it's tag in this location. If you get the information off of the tag there are a million web site on the net to identify the car (from interior, original exterior color, trim package, engine etc.).

If you want to know the size of the engine that is in the car, there are cast numbers on the engine block itself, the are right above the bell housing of the transmission on the driver side of the car. these numbers will directly tell you the size and displacement of the engine...

Usually the number on the front passenger side of the engine block matches the motor to a specific car.... ie what is described on the firewall tag etc.

Good luck!
Bill

Block casting number will be hidden by the AT kickdown bracket if it is an AT car.
