I don't remember for sure but you WILL find out at this AMC forum. The AMC Forum
I sure am glad I went the extra mile and had the flatty rebuilt, I love opening that hood up for people. I have to say, been driving it now every single day for 3.5 years now. I love that damn old car.
The 195.6 (196) OHV and L-head are basically the same engine from the head down. AMC converted the L-head to OHV in 1956. The bottom ends are identical, as well as transmissions and many other parts. The block casting was changed on the right side to accommodate the OHV head though. The head bolt pattern had to be changed as well, so you can't bolt an OHV head to the old L-head, but everything except the distributor, valve train, cam, and pistons (L-head pistons are flat top, OHV are domed) will interchange. The camshafts will physically interchange, but the cam profiles are very different since the L-head acts directly on the lifters and the OHV has a 1.6:1 rocker ratio.
The later engines will swap into the older cars, but 63-65 models have bosses on the side of the block for side motor mounts. The older engine use front and rear mounts and don't have the bosses, so older engies won't fit in the later cars. The 65 model has a full flow oil pump with filter on the pump like more modern engines. Those won't fit the 58-63 American due to clearance issues on the right side (will fit the early big cars). Trans bolt pattern is the same on all 58-71 AMC sixes. The later 199/232 six won't fit in the little 58-63 American due to length of the engine.
