1961 C20 Rear End

I have a 61 Chev c20 , 283, 4:56 rear. Can I get a 3:73 or 4:10 set of gears? This 283 runs about 3k to do 55. If I put in a 700r4 would that help? I am running 16" wheels stock tires. If I can't get the gears I want, what is the best way to go? I have talked to several shops and they say I am crazy, just leave the old truck alone. So, I thought the best way to find out is to ask the best hotrodders on the net. You guys know your stuff and I would bet that you have run into this problem before. Please remember that I am on a low budget. Thanks for all you help, keep up the good work.

Thanks
Ralbon

Hey Ral, and welcome!
You didn't say what tranny you have in there now, but if it's a 350 or a 400, than a 700r4 will definatly help. A set of rear gears will also. The rear gears will be cheaper, but you'll loose some torque. The 700r4 will give the best of both worlds, same torque, but with an overdrive to give you highway drivability. What kind of rear is in there now?

1961 C20 Rear End

Hello gt2betubbed:

I have a 400 w/ 4:56 rear. I have already rebuilt a 700r4 to put in the truck. I just haven't got enough get up and go to intall it. This 700r4 isn't the same length as the 400 so I will have to redo the drive shaft. I was wondering about the availability of a different set of gears for a truck this old, 1961. I know a guy here in town that can shorten a drive shaft but he cannot make it longer. So I'll get a longer front shaft and let him cut it down to the right length. I had to do that when I went from the old 4 spd to the 400. If I don't change it out before long, I'll not have the unction. Thanks for your help

Ralbon
