My dad had a '62 GMC with a coil spring rear end. He put 252,000 miles on it and never had a problem. I think they ride better, but that just my opinion.

I have read / been told that the wishbone and coil spring suspension is very good in regards to weight transfer, and that you don't get any leaf spring wrap that causes wheel hop either.

Even Nascar liked this suspension!

The Bubbletop Years: 1958-1963

We broke this era down basically due to the rooflines of the cars involved. The General Motors coil-sprung, X-frame cars marked a significant change in 1958, but they didn't have the sleek, Buck Rogers styling of the new-for-'59 models. By this time the racers were guaranteed to have rollcages, doors bolted shut, perhaps fabricated door panels, and the leaf-sprung cars tended to have long rear shackles. The venerable truck-arm suspension, lifted from the '60-'72 Chevy pickup rear suspension and still used in today's Winston Cup cars, debuted during this era under Junior Johnson's '63 Impala. GM bubbles and their equally swoopy Dearborn friends define the look, but freakish square-style Thunderbirds and huge-finned Petty '60 Mopars also competed back in the day. The photo is by Bob D'Olivo from the '60 Daytona 500.
