1964 chevelle ignition switcch

Anyone out there know how to remove the ignition switch from a 64 chevelle. I bought a new one but have no clue how to get the old one out. PS I have no key for the old switch.

Do you have a small hole in the face of the key part?

If so, what you are SUPPOSED to do is insert the key... and turn back to accessory side and put a pin in that small hole and press in. The key will turn further CCW when you do and then the lock assembly will come out. At that point you can remove the bezel.

Since you dont have the key, this is a problem. I think in the past I have had to break the bezel to remove it.

Your tryin to take the ignition out to replace it with a new one?

Its got a bezel nut in the front, unscrew it and pull the ignition out from the back of the dash...

Sure it will , i never took the tumbler out to get mine outta the dash... It just screws on to the front as if the ignition were a "bolt" and the bezel a "nut". Did it a few times in the past. Thats if your wanting to get at the whole shabang, not the insides "tumbler". Which i think he's replacing the whole thing anyway..

I could be wrong but thats how mine is....its a 65, and all the interior is chevelle.

That could be. Maybe that came a couple years later as a security thing. I remember them to have a lip on the bezel that was behind the key tumbler. You had to use the pin in that little hole to remove the tumbler then the bezel came off.

Hey, thanks everyone on the replies. Mine is a 64 Malibu SS and the switch has a bezel in the front but it also has a lip on the turn knob. This prevents the removal without taking the key tumbler out. Unfornutatley I had to break the knob off and replace the entire thing with a new one. Got all the locks keyed the same though. Thanks.

Glad you got it. That is what I as thinking as I have had to bust the bezels before as well. I suppose you could drill the switch out but if you have an extra bezel why bother

You were right after all mcabe

In the begining, when I got my car the bezel was ugly and looked abused..I replaced it with a brass nut that fit the threads..I guess what happened the last guy broke the bezel and put it back on broken... I was checkin it out today and yep sure 'nuff theres 2 holes in the ignition face.
That showed me not to 2nd guess someone with some expierence LOL.

Have a good one u guys.
