Question 1964 T-Bird motor ID

How do I read the codes on the motor to verify it is a 390 4V and not a pickup motor.

I am a Gm mechanic , but I still love my old fords before 67 . My dad had a 66 tbird with a 428 engine that would lift off and fly at the drop of a gas pedal . I looked into one of my old shop manuals and mabe this will help . In 1964 Thunderbird had a standard 390 4v engine , in the serial no on the top of your block it should have a Z in the no , if its a Q or and R , look at the side of your engine block just above the oil pan if you see 3 large bolts on each side of your engine you have a 427 Thunderbird V8 , the 427 cam in 2 and 4v versions . if your code doesn't match these codes it may be older or newer than a 64 model but if its a 64 engine it will be one of these 3 codes to be in a bird . a 64 352 is an x code . As far as eyeballing the Fe ford engines the 6 main bearing cap bolts through the side of the block is a dead give away to a cross bolted 427 but the 390 , 352 , 360 , 361 ,428 and a couple of other big truck engines all look about the same and are almost identical . If you have the no off the block dont hesitate to email me and I will look it up for you . stinmar1@connectnc.net
