1965 impala tail light issue

I think I have an easy one, I hope you guys can help out.

1965 impala ss floor shift.
when turning on the lights, the left side tail lights are like the brake is being pressed (very bright), turn signal on the left side does not work, right side seems to be fine bright wise, when pressing the brakes they get bright and the turn signal works great.

The reverse lights do not work but have not looked at it yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Start with the bulbs. Sounds like the left side has a bad one of the 3.

Some times the filaments in those incandescent tail light bulbs would touch each other due to vibration and cause this scenario. Drives you nuts the first time you have to figure the problem out!

Sounds like maybe some wires swapped or touching causing brakelite/flasher bulb to be hot when tail lites are on.Have you rewired anything in the circuit ? A wrong bulb could also cause this.

Thanks guys

I will check everything again.

The wiring was hacked up and never worked since I started the resto. I rewired. The bulbs are new, and I also checked all of the ground contacts and used light sandpaper on the socket and at the base.

Thanks to all, I will let you know what I find out.

**Update

I got 2 new sockets and now all of the lights are working properly, except when I hit the brakes, none of them get brighter.

Also probably a stupid question but will the reverse lights turn on when the car is in accesory mode or do I need to turn the car on?

Any ideas? Going to wait for some input and start on the front end.

Thanks in advance

Back up lights should work with the key in the on (run) position, doesnt have to be running.....not sure about the accessory position

As for the not getting brighter, those are dual filament bulbs....I cant see all 4 being bad, so would suspect bad wiring, ground or stop light switch maybe.

voltage tester

Check the fuse for the brake lights with a voltage tester. Different fuses are usually used for brake lights and turn signals. But the same bulb filament is used for both. This is because the brake lights function with ignition OFF. While the TS work with the ignition ON.
If the fuse is OK go to the brake light switch. One terminal will be hot and the other terminal will be hot only when the pedal is depressed.
If that's working the TS switch could be bad. The brake light circuit passes through the TS switch when it's in the center position.

Ok here is where I am at

Replaced the bulb sockets on the drivers side. The passenger side works perfectly, the turn signal/brake lights/normal lights work. (have not started dealing with the reverse lights yet)

The drivers side runs with the normal lights but the turn signal does not work(dash light stays lit solid) and the brake lights do not work on the drivers side at all

I tried replacing the bulbs on that side and isolated the drivers farthest left socket. when I reverse the wires on that one bulb (new) it lights up like the brakes are on.

I will check the fuses but if it is working on one side perfectly would it still be the fuses?

Guys, I really appreciate the help....This is driving me nuts

Ok. I misunderstood you. I thought the brake lights were not working at all.
It sounds like the driver side wiring connections at the sockets is not correct.
The tail light wire color should be black or brown. The left turn signal wire color should be pink or yellow.
The right side turn signal wire color should be purple or violet or dark green.
Check that the tail light wires go the dim filament and turn signal wires go the bright filament of the bulb.

i had the same issue, ended up being the turn signal switch, (in the steering) replaced it and works perfect now.. appears to have gone bad or bad connections...
