1968 302 with 289 heads?

A friend of mine sold me an engine he was building to race. He decided to move to a big block so I bought his 302. He suggested I put my stock 289 heads on it however. He said something about the valve size. Does anyone know what I stand to gain from the 289 heads on a 302? Aren't the simply the same heads? I'm guessing the valves are bigger. How will that help me?

289 heads on 302

if they are 65or early 66 with chev style non rail rockers they are better heads most likly smaller chambers than later 302s. but you must use the push rods that go with the heads. valve sise is the same, early 302 rail rocker heads have the small chambers so you must determine what vintage the 302 is. probly as well to leave the 302 as is. cliff

thanks for your help. I think the heads I have are 1968 mfr'd but the 302 is an '82. ...fun to buy parts when you start making modifications from stock.

fair chance your buddies "valve" comment relates to less valve shrouding on the early 289 heads due to the shape of the chamber which promotes a better burn.....(helps on a high rpm race car, does very little on the street)

irony: over the years the chambers were a bunch of different shapes.....the last 5.0 heads chambers shape was.....same as the original 289!

small chance you already have the small (289) 302 54cc chambers if they are 68' 4V rail rocker heads.....more likely they are 2V 63cc....which with flat top pistons and mild cam puts you at about 9.5CR where you want to be....do a compression test

Cliff's info is dead on......I agree....."just" raising the compression with smaller chambers isn't worth it......

here's a early heads chart to help you figure out which heads you have

Thanks for all the input

I'll be checking it out. I just got the car together, but messing with the heads is no sweat. I'll keep toying!
