1968 350 starter replacement

We just replaced the reman'd starter with another reman'd and we get a clunk like the gear is extending but the engine is not turning over. I should add that this is the second starter I've tried. The first one turn the engine over for about two seconds. I read a couple problems similar to this but would like to know if it's possible that a remanufactured starter could need shims even though it looks exactly like the one I took off, that didn't have shims. I also read an answer that had to do with compression. Would it make sense to pull the plugs and then try to turn it over? Sorry, I've changed starters before and never run into this situation.

It might need to be shimmed. There should have been instructions and even sometimes shims included w/the starter. If not, there are shims sold where you bought the starter, most likely.

1968 starter replacement

No instructions, no shims. I'll go get some and try it. Should I only shim the side closest to the block as some have suggested or shim the whole thing from the get go?

These instructions are what comes in many reman starters. The starter shown is the angled bolt pattern starter nose used w/the "big" 14" (168T) flex/flywheel. Yours may be the starter w/the bolts directly across form each other, used w/the "small" 12-3/4" (153T) flex/flywheel. The procedure is the same for both.

If it just goes clunk and is not grinding, I would bet the solenoid is junk. Where are you getting these starters
