1968 C10 chevy Pick a tranny to use in it

I recently purchased a 68 C10 LWB. It has a 350/250hp 70' Caprice engine and a three-on-the-tree manual. What are your thoughts on an AT? I have the chance to buy a rebuilt 700r4 with 1000 mi. on it for 400 bucks. Is there a better choice for a tranny?

700 is great if you want a 4-speed. They have their foibles, but nothing the aftermarket hasn't solved. A little tuning helps their drivability a lot, but if it aint broke don't fix it. Bolt it in and if you don't like how it operates, then worry about it. Behind a 250-hp engine it will probably outlast the truck

If you can get by with a 3-speed, the TH400 is darn near bulletproof and pretty cheap to find.

As long as you're not going to hot rod the motor, a 200-4r is also a fine choice. It won't like gobs of torque or heavy towing/wheeling, but its a fine tranny with more desirable gear ratio splits.

You can also get the od 4speed manuals (used in some 80s 6.2 diesel pickups) for a couple hundred bucks.
