1968 Firebird Door Panel Top Rail

My firebird did not come with any door panels and I am trying to make my own. I ordered the top rails for the door panel but I am not sure how they attach to the door. I cut the board to fit the door and attached one of the top rails to the panel board so that the top of the rail was even with the outer skin of the door. Does anyone have any experience with this?

The metal piece at the top of the door just slips over the top of the door on the inside. It also needs a belt weatherstrip to seal against the window glass. From there, you need to attach the panel board to the metal piece and trim it to fit the door. You can attach the belt weatherstrip with staples, stainless steel or aluminum pop rivets, or very small flathead screws.

Your car is an easy one to get OEM door panels for. Are you looking to make the door panels custom, or do you want stock door panels?

I'm wanting to make custom door panels.

I've allready attached the door panel to the top rail and trimmed the panel. When I attach the weatherstripping does it tighten up the fit between the top rail and the door, it seems really loose now?

No, not really, the fit should be snug. The weatherstrip is there to wipe the window and protect the glass from getting scratched. If the door panel is loose at the top, there is something wrong.
