1969 Mustang Rear Axle Vent

I noticed that a previous owner put a bolt in the rear axle vent opening on my car. What does the rear axle vent do, and where does the hose coming off the vent go?

The vent lets off pressure that builds up in the rear end when it gets warm. If the vent does not work then the seals and gaskets will start leaking because of the pressure. Many Ford rear end vents also have the brake line built in. There shouldn't be a hose coming off of the vent other than the brake hose.

Thanks! The pictures I've seen in parts catalogs show a hose coming off the vent (about the size of a fuel line hose, it looks like). It looks like it slips over the top of the vent nipple. I have no idea where the other end goes.
