1969 Z28 Project

Hi Everyone,

My name is Wayne and i am the original owner of a 1969 Z28. I am embarking on a total restoration of this car. The only problem I have is ....the original short block was replaced by GM and the subsequent engine was stolen from the car. Now I am faced with a decision....go back to the original 302cid 290 hp or go all out with a 468cid 630hp big block.

Project to start in the spring when I retrieve the car from storage. I will document the priocess as it goes.

Later......

welcome.......replacing that 302 is going to be a toughie, but probably worth it in the long run...........That big block sounds like fun too.

If I were in your shoes and if I were going to restore the car for show and points I would go back with the original size engine and restore the car in stock condition. This type restoration, stock, with awards will help to increase the value of the car over time, if you ever plan to sell it. If you plan on keeping the car and want good looks and power....go all out and have fun with it!

Considering the obscene value of an original 69 Z/28, there would be no doubt in my mind which way I would go. There are enough 69 Z/28 302 parts on the market to build up a 302. It isn't going to be cheap, but will be more than worth it. 69 Z/28's in original condition can fetch upwards of $80,000 and prices continue to increase.

Well there seems to be a consensis that the orig. 302cid/290hp would be the way to go....if I plan on selling the car. I have no IMMEDIATE plans to sell the car so I'm thinking that the BB is the way to go. I do have some original parts from the car - original exhaust manifolds, A.I.R. system, Holley Carb, distributer and misc. parts. I am going to start a quest to find all the parts to put together a complete 302cid with the correct block, heads, intake, etc and store it. That way if I decide to sell the car, I can offer it either complete stock with the 302cid or modified with the 302 as an extra....let the buyer decide what they want to do with the car. I would of course advertise it both ways and see what configuration would bring the most money.

What do you think?

Well,

I think your plan would work, although you are paying for two engines! I built a '69 Z28 back to original about 15 years ago, and even then a DZ block wasn't cheap-I kick myself a lot for ever selling that car (keep yours!)-

Price for a 1969 Z28......

I recently encountered someone who's brother has an original 1969 Z28. The car has never been stored and is sitting with some plastic covering it. He says the engine is seized and the body is pretty rough.

Anybody want to guess what's it's approximately worth???
