1970 chevelle ss 12 bolt

did the 1970 chevelle ss come with a specific gearset for the 12 bolt or was it just a dealer option? im asking for a friend of mine who recently purchased this rear with stock ss gears in it

any help would be appreciated

gears

Without looking in my book,,, I am just going from memory here.. I think the 70 chevelle ss was available with any gear from 2:73's to 4:88's So you will need to tell us the code from the axel tube on the front side of the rear. Then it's only good if no body in the last 35 years changed the ratio...

If no one specified whrn ordering, it probably has 3.08s or 3.23s.................Take the cover off and check the gears. Probably time o change the fluid anyways.

My brother's 70 Chevelle SS396 4-speed car came from the factory with 3:73 posi. Easy enough to pull the cover off and check.

Put a mark on the ring ( the big gear ) and turn it and count the teeth.
Repeat on the pinion ( the small gear )...

Take the big gear number and divide by the small gear number....

EXAMPLE 41 divided by 10 = 4.10

re: 1970 chevelle ss 12 bolt

Look around the edge of the ring gear and you will likely find 4 numbers, most likely 2 digits each, that will tell you the tooth count of the ring & pinion gears and the month & year of manufacture. For example, if you see 41 10 12 70, you have a 41:10 (4.10) gearset that was manufactured in December of 1970.

. . . and according to all of my sources, limited-slip/posi was NOT an automatic option on the Chevelle SS.

It had to be specifically ordered.

Don't recall anyone saying it was.
