FWIW, it is not horsepower which kills trannies, but shock loading. As long as you drive it normally, it will last forever behind 500hp. Try to shift flat from first to second will kill it on the first try.

thnx, jack vines

Unless you buy specialty gears ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$), it is usually impossible to make a standard transmission "stronger". Cramming from gear to gear will ruin any standard transmission. Once in gear only major shocks will hurt the gears.

Now if you are planning on flying backwards, then slamming into first gear and stomping on it, your transmission WILL suddenly have extra pieces in it.

I would suspect, and you can verify it by looking, that it is the typical Ford 3 spd that shares many intenals with a Top Loader. If it has a cover on the top...it is. They are plenty strong, probably in the same league as the 4spd Top Loader...just shy a gear.
