With the really high prices put on anything from the musclecar years, someone will snap that up quick if you don't. Many people hoard anything of that age, and only sell if they get alot of money. Sounds like he wants you to have it, maybe he remembers being that age and trying to get a cool car, don't know. He seems like he is reasonable with you, even giving you the opportunity to keep it there if you are commited to it. You could probably part it out and get the money back or sell it easily later for that price. It will be some work, no doubt, but I wouldn't pass it up.

I bought my car 6 years ago for $600. No engine transmission and the interior was there but needed, still does, a complete makeover.
