1973 Chevelle Malibu Engine Rebuild (pics 56k)
Hey guys, this is my '73 malibu's engine after two scored cylinders and 103k miles on it. The engine is getting rebuild now and I will put up pics of the new engine. Here's what was in it when it came out hehe.... Sorry for the amount of pics.

The engine is a sbc 350, it's currently in the shop but when it comes out it'll be a 355 (.030 over).

Story on the car: It was my grandpa's car (no jokes/smart remarks about it being a 4-dr :P) and he gave it to my dad who's a mechanic in 1989. He took the stock 350 engine that was in there, tore it down and rebuilt it. When it was done he took it down to Lincoln City (Oregon coast) to his friend who was a muffler specialist. He put a new exhaust system on it then on the way back opened it up on a Looong stretch of road (before he'd properly broken the engine in) and scored two of the cylinders because he had a rebuild carb on there with frozen secondaries. That's where it all started. He soon realized the problem and fixed the secondaries a week later or so but the damage was already done as you can see. So it's been driven like that until we put it down cause it was running sooo bad in 2002, right before I got my permit. Now I finally got him to get the dang thing in the garage so we could rebuild the engine. This is what it looked like when it came out. Needless to say, we didn't know the amount of damage done, but we didn't expect this much :pain: So we're rebuilding it now and it should be done within 3-4weeks, maybe sooner, probably sometime in August though. I'll post new pics when we get the engine back from the machine shop.

73's are the best year, style wise. mine is like the laguna Vista w/o the 2 tone paint(its a restification not a original) . have you looked into rims yet? try 17's they look pretty good. years ago i almost traded my 73 for a newer 79 lesabre with a louvered hood. i had to turn the offer down. optioned out these are hardcore cruisers. swing out seats! can your hotrod do that? drop a big small block in. saya 400hp, 400" , and a sturdy 3.73 pinion set.

currently im looking into a GVendors unit to increase top speed and mpgs

is that that Colonade edition?

if you ask me 73 is the bang out year!

you may have a couple of bad valves there. you had better just replace the engine with a 400.

No it's not a colonade edition. I'm not sure what that is heh :embarrass

Now while the engine is out clean your firewall and inner fenders and spray-bomb them flat black :D

Looking good!!

Thanks nightfire, we're going to clean the engine compartment sometime this week or next I believe.

Also, I'm still trying to decide what color I should paint the block/heads etc..

What do you think would look good? We've just received our new valve covers/air cleaner cover/timing chain cover. They're grey, I was thinking of painting the block black... I'm not sure...

I think we're going to go with black.

We just sent off our 700R4 tranny with my dad's friend to get rebuilt. If it gets back in time, we'll stick it in the malibu for some 4th gear goodness

Cool car to start with. Suggestion: if you find you need crank machine work done, why not spend the couple extra bucks and get a 383 crank for it? Given that you'll need new pistons too, might not be a bad upgrade for that car. You'll have yourself a nice little hotrod either way, looks like fun.

Boy howdy, you burned the living dog crap out of those exhaust valves!

Tell me about it. The car ran like for a short period of time but the damage was devastating...

I wanted to do a 383 stroker out of the 350 we have now but money was an issue so, maybe later when we possibly get the Camaro.

Here's some pics of the headers/block/heads and other misc stuff going on the car.

What do you think of the new/redone parts?

Nightfire 07-21-2005 05:24 PM

Lookin' good  I like the grey v/c's and air cleaner, it'll look like a factory muslce car in the 60's! Got any more pics of the car? What color is it gonna be?
