Post 1977 Buick rearend will it hold up?

I have a question concerning a 1977 Buick Riviera disc brake rear end.
We are planning to install this onto a 1972 C10 pick up truck with a 400 hp 383 stroker and a beefed up 350 trans. will this rearend take the power or is it too weak.

we choose this piece for the disc brake option.

as we are located in the Netherlands (europe) parts are fairly hard to come by , so any help would be apriciated.

regards Bas

Post re: 1977 Buick rearend will it hold up?

I have a 1977 Buick skylark and the first rearend I had in it was the original 10 bolt 2:56 ratio one wheel wonder. I took out the 6 cyl. and put in a '71 455 and the rearend held for maybe 8 months with hard driving until I was driving in the country on the way home from work and the ring gear broke a tooth wedged itself between the pinion and ring gear and shot it through the casing locking it up at about 70 mph. Not a fun experience. I now have a 9" 31 spline and I have had no problems since and that was 4 years ago. I don't think that they hold to the torque very well.

this one came out of a riviera, 403 engine, 400 trans. and it is a limited slip diff, so i dont believe it would be the same as one from your 6 cilinder. but thank you any way.

Exactly which rear is it? Is it a 10 bolt 8.5 or 8.2? Either way neither are known for superior strength, but each can do a great job to an extent. At the very least you might consider a little beef up. Some new axles, stock or aftermarket, with new C-Clips would be good insurance. I would think an engine like that should be capable of 450 lbs of torque at the least.

On second thought, what's wrong with the 12 bolt that came in your pickup. It might be just as easy to convert it to disks instead of a complete swap. You might want to have a look at the two and see what interchanges, you might get lucky. That 12 bolt is one tough cookie. Nothing against this site, perhaps 67-72 chevy trucks might have a better answer and response to your question.
