1977 C10 frame cracks (stearing box location)
Hello,
I was working on my C10 and noticed there's cracks starting from the bolt holes to the stearing box. I'm wondering if I could drill the ends of each crack to stop them from spreading. Then starting from the hardest side to get to (prob from tire in) hit the cracks lightly with a grinder (to open it up a tad and ensure penetration) and fill with weld then smooth. Then on the easy side back gouge with the grinder into fresh weld and then weld. So now the cracks are "gone" and I've filled my drilled holes with weld, now to keep it from happining again. I was thinking about taking the longest strip of equal thinkness (to frame) plate I could fit and welding it in on the nut side of the frame. Looks like I could get a couple feet of plate to help dispurse the stress... I plan on boxing the frame in eventually too but we'll see. Think that will work? |

that would work
i think that this is a common problem and there is a repair kit available and that may be easier or at least give you some ideas |

Yep----got an 81 in my yard that has had that repair done on it.
But the welder got a little over zealous and welded the bumper bracket to the frame as well. |

Might also check the shock mounts on the frame.
I had to get that area repaired on my 79 @ 250,000 miles. Shocks broke a section of the frame out on both sides. Took me a long time to find that rattle/clunking going on. |
